Claude Can Now Work While You're Away From Your Desk

2026-03-24

Claude Cowork's new task assignment feature lets you delegate work to AI from your phone and come back to finished results. Here's what it means for small business owners.

One of the most common frustrations with AI tools is that they require you to be present. You open a tab, type a prompt, wait for a response, review it, follow up — it’s a conversation, and like any conversation, it only happens when both parties are there.

Anthropic just changed that.

Claude Cowork’s new task assignment feature — available now on Pro and Max plans — lets you assign work to Claude from your phone or desktop and walk away. Claude completes the task in the background and sends you a push notification when it’s done. You don’t have to be at your desk. You don’t have to babysit the output. You come back to finished work.

That’s a meaningful shift for small business owners.

What the Feature Actually Does

At its core, this is about delegation — real delegation, not just prompting.

You have a single persistent conversation thread with Claude that stays active across your devices. Assign a task from your phone while you’re between meetings, and Claude picks it up on your desktop and gets to work. When it’s done, you get a notification. The context from previous conversations is retained, so Claude already knows your preferences, your projects, and how you like things done.

The types of tasks you can delegate include:

  • Pull data from a spreadsheet and compile a report — Claude accesses local files, runs the analysis, and delivers the finished document
  • Search your email or Slack and draft a summary or response — useful for weekly catch-ups or staying on top of a specific thread
  • Access Google Drive files and build a presentation — give Claude the brief and come back to a first draft
  • Organize or process folders — batch renaming, sorting, categorizing files across your system
  • Operate desktop applications directly — Claude can work inside Excel, dashboards, and other tools through computer use

And critically: you can schedule recurring tasks. Morning email triage. Weekly metrics pulls. Friday report compilations. Set it once, and Claude does it on schedule without you having to ask again.

Why This Matters for Small Business Owners

Most small business owners don’t have a team of people to delegate to. The default is that everything — the report that needs pulling, the inbox that needs triaging, the document that needs drafting — sits in a queue until you get to it.

What Cowork’s task feature changes is that your AI now has a queue too. You can offload work to it the same way you’d hand something off to a capable assistant: give it the task, give it access to what it needs, and let it run.

A few practical examples of how this plays out:

You’re traveling between client meetings. You pull out your phone, type “compile last week’s sales data from the spreadsheet on my desktop and put together a one-page summary,” and keep walking. By the time you’re back at your desk, it’s done.

It’s Monday morning. Instead of spending 45 minutes catching up on email and pulling numbers, Claude has already processed your inbox, summarized the threads that need your attention, and drafted responses to the routine ones.

You have a weekly client report. Instead of blocking time every Friday to pull it together, Claude runs it automatically — same format, same sources, delivered to a folder. You review and send.

The value compounds when you stack recurring tasks. Each automation you set up is time you permanently stop spending.

What You Need to Know Before Getting Started

A few things worth setting expectations on:

It requires Claude Pro or Max. This isn’t available on the free plan. The feature runs inside Claude Desktop (macOS or Windows) and the Claude mobile app.

Your desktop needs to stay on. For Claude to do computer-based tasks — accessing files, running applications — your desktop needs to be awake and the Claude Desktop app needs to be open. If you’re traveling and your laptop is closed, those specific tasks won’t run. Scheduled tasks that don’t require your local machine are unaffected.

It’s a research preview. The feature is still being refined. It’s genuinely capable, but expect some rough edges — and plan to review outputs before they go anywhere important.

Context is persistent, but you control what it retains. Claude learns your preferences across sessions, which makes it more useful over time. You have full control over what it remembers and can clear it at any point.

Is This Right for Your Business?

If you’re already using Claude for drafting, research, or analysis — and finding yourself wishing it could just handle more of the follow-through — this feature is worth setting up now.

If you’re not yet using Claude, this is a compelling reason to start. The combination of agentic capability, mobile access, and scheduled tasks puts Claude closer to an actual assistant than anything available before it.

The businesses that invest in learning how to delegate to AI effectively right now are going to have a real operational advantage. The learning curve is shorter than it looks — but the setup matters. Done well, you end up with a system that runs work in the background while you focus on what actually needs you.
